How to Turn the Notes App Into Light Mode: 4 Ways

The Notes app on iPhone and iPad has no appearance switch of its own. It follows the system, so open Settings > Display & Brightness and choose Light, and Notes turns light along with everything else. If you want the phone to stay dark and only Notes to look light, that takes a different route, and on a Mac there is a checkbox built for exactly this.

1. Switch the system appearance (iPhone and iPad)

This is the fix for most people, and it takes about ten seconds.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Display & Brightness.
  3. Tap Light at the top.
  4. Turn Automatic off, just below. If Automatic is on with a sunset schedule, your phone will go dark again tonight and you will think the setting did not stick.

Two faster versions of the same switch: open Control Center and tap the Dark Mode button (add it first in Settings > Control Center if it is not there), or ask Siri to turn off Dark Mode.

If you only want light mode during certain hours, the Shortcuts app handles it without you touching anything. Create a personal automation with a Time of Day trigger, add the Set Appearance action, set it to Light, and turn off the "ask before running" confirmation so it fires silently.

2. Keep the phone dark, make only Notes light

iOS has no per-app theme picker, but it does have per-app accessibility settings, and Smart Invert lands close enough for reading and writing notes.

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Per-App Settings.
  3. Tap Add App and choose Notes.
  4. Open the Notes entry and set Smart Invert to On.

Now Notes shows dark text on a light page while the rest of the phone stays in dark mode. Smart Invert is called smart because it skips images and media, so photos and scanned pages inside a note usually survive. Usually is the honest word: some attachments and colored highlights come out wrong, and that is the cost of using an accessibility feature as a theme switch.

A cleaner variant if your dark mode is tied to a routine: create a Focus for studying, open it, tap Add Filter, choose the Dark Mode system filter, and set it to off. The phone goes light whenever that Focus is on and returns to dark when you end it.

3. On a Mac, Notes has a real switch

The Mac version of Notes is the one place where the app itself decides. Open Notes > Settings and look for the option that uses dark backgrounds for note content, then uncheck it. The app chrome, sidebar and note list stay dark, but the page you type on goes white. This is the setting people are usually looking for when they ask how to turn the Notes app into light mode: a dark interface with a readable white page.

To make everything light instead, go to the Apple menu, open System Settings > Appearance, and choose Light.

4. Other notes apps

Most third-party apps ignore the system and keep their own theme setting, which is good news if you want a mixed setup.

App Where the switch lives Independent of the OS?
Apple Notes (iPhone, iPad) Settings > Display & Brightness No
Apple Notes (Mac) Notes > Settings > dark backgrounds checkbox Partly: page white, app dark
Google Keep Menu > Settings > Theme > Light Yes
Notion Settings > Appearance > Light Yes
Obsidian Settings > Appearance > Base color scheme > Light Yes
OneNote Settings > Theme (mobile), View tab (desktop) Yes
Samsung Notes Android Settings > Display > Light No

If an app has no theme setting at all, the per-app Smart Invert trick from step 2 works on it too.

The note still looks dark after you switch

Three causes, in the order you should check them.

Pasted text carries its own colors. Text copied from a web page or a PDF often arrives with a hardcoded font color. In dark mode it was white and readable; in light mode it is white on white and looks blank. On a Mac, re-paste with Command + Shift + Option + V to match style. On iPhone, check the arrow at the end of the paste menu for a paste-and-match-style option, or retype the heading.

The content is an image, not text. A photo of a page taken under a desk lamp, or a scan saved with a dark background, stays dark no matter what the theme is. Rescan it with the Notes document scanner, which flattens and brightens the page, or crop and adjust the image itself.

You are looking at a cached preview. Widgets and the share sheet sometimes hold the old appearance for a while. Force-quit Notes and reopen it before assuming the setting failed.

Colors also follow the note when it leaves the app, which matters if you print or export. If you are exporting to PDF to read or annotate elsewhere, turning the note into a clean file first avoids inherited dark backgrounds eating a printer cartridge.

Where light mode does not help

There is real evidence behind the default preference for dark text on a light background. In Buchner and Baumgartner's 2007 study in Ergonomics, participants performed better on reading and proofreading tasks with positive polarity, that is dark text on a light background, and the advantage held across different ambient lighting conditions. Later work by Piepenbrock and colleagues pointed at pupil size as part of the reason: a bright background contracts the pupil, which sharpens focus.

That is an average, not a rule about you. People with astigmatism often report halation around bright text in dark mode and genuinely read better on a light screen, while people with light sensitivity, migraine history or a habit of reading in bed frequently do better in dark mode. Screen brightness matters more than polarity in a dark room: a light theme at full brightness at midnight is worse than a dark theme, for both comfort and sleep.

The larger limit is that neither theme changes what the notes do for you. A note you can read is still a note you are only rereading, and rereading is one of the weakest ways to study. If the reason you are fixing the display is that revision sessions feel unproductive, the theme is not the bottleneck; converting the material into questions you answer from memory is the change that shows up in a test.

Common questions

Why is my Notes app dark when my phone is in light mode?

Check whether Automatic is still on in Settings > Display & Brightness, because a scheduled switch overrides your manual choice each evening. On a Mac, the separate Notes setting for dark note backgrounds can keep pages dark even when macOS appearance is Light. Also check Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings in case Notes has an old inversion rule attached to it.

Can I make Apple Notes light without changing my whole iPhone?

Not with an official theme setting, because Notes on iOS has none. The closest option is Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings > Notes > Smart Invert, which flips the app to a light page while the system stays dark. Expect a few odd colors in highlights and attachments.

Does the Notes app have its own dark mode setting?

On macOS, yes: Notes has a checkbox that controls dark backgrounds for note content independently of the system appearance. On iOS and iPadOS, no. The app inherits whatever the system is set to.

Why is my text invisible in light mode?

Almost always because the text has an explicit white font color pasted in from somewhere else. Select the affected text and clear the formatting, or paste again using paste and match style so the note applies its own color. Typing over the passage also fixes it.

Turning the Notes app into light mode is a system-level change on iPhone and iPad, an app-level checkbox on Mac, and an in-app theme setting in almost every third-party notes app. Start with Settings > Display & Brightness > Light and turn Automatic off, and if you want the phone dark but the notes light, add Notes to Per-App Settings with Smart Invert on. Then check one long note for pasted white text, because that is the single change most likely to look like the setting did not work.
