How to Make Flashcards From Notes: A 5-Step Method

To make flashcards from your notes, mark the specific things you could be asked about, write one question per card, keep each answer to a single idea, and test yourself the same day. The writing is not the hard part. Deciding what deserves a card is, and a normal page of class notes usually yields 8 to 15 real cards, not 40.

The method below works whether you are cutting index cards or typing into an app. The steps are the same; only the last one changes.

Step 1: Mark what could become a question

Read the page once without writing anything. Then go back and mark only the items that an exam could ask you to produce from memory: definitions, dates, formulas, causes, mechanisms, contrasts between two similar things, and anything your instructor repeated or said would be on the test.

What you skip matters as much as what you keep. Skip transitions, examples you already understand, restatements of a point you marked two lines up, and anything you copied off a slide without following it. A concept you do not understand yet does not become understood by being on a card. It becomes a card you fail every time and start skipping.

If you find yourself marking most of the page, you are marking topics instead of questions. Narrow it.

Step 2: Write one card per idea

Each card gets one question and one answer. This is the rule people break first, and it is the reason most homemade decks feel unusable by week two.

Write the answer in your own words rather than copying the sentence from your notes. If you cannot restate it, that is useful information: go back to the source now, not during review week.

Step 3: Make sure each question has one right answer

A good card gives you a clear pass or fail. Vague fronts like "explain the French Revolution" let you mumble something and move on. Compare:

  1. "What did the Third Estate do on 17 June 1789?" gives you one answer you either have or do not have.
  2. Fill in the blank works well for facts embedded in a sentence: "The Third Estate declared itself the ____ on 17 June 1789."
  3. Two sided cards work for anything with a clean pair: term and definition, formula and what it solves, drug and mechanism.
  4. For processes, ask for the next step rather than the whole chain: "In glycolysis, what immediately follows the formation of fructose 1,6 bisphosphate?"

Reversing matters too. Knowing that "tachycardia means fast heart rate" does not mean you can produce "tachycardia" when given the definition. If the exam will ask in both directions, make both cards.

Step 4: Test the deck the day you make it

Run through the whole deck once, out loud or on paper, before you consider it finished. Say the answer before you flip. Do not read the back and think "yes, I knew that," which is the single most common way flashcards turn into rereading with extra steps.

This first pass is quality control. Any card you cannot answer because the question is ambiguous gets rewritten, not marked wrong. Any card where the answer turns out to be three ideas gets split. Expect to fix roughly one card in five on the first pass.

Step 5: Space the reviews out

Do not review the deck again the same evening. Come back the next day, then in three days, then a week later. Cards you get wrong come back sooner; cards you get right go to the back of the pile.

The reason to do it this way rather than cramming the deck is well documented. In Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 experiments, students who read a passage and then took recall tests remembered far more a week later than students who reread the passage the same number of times, even though the rereading group predicted they would do better. Dunlosky and colleagues' 2013 review of ten study techniques reached a similar conclusion, rating practice testing and distributed practice as high utility while rereading and highlighting landed at the bottom.

If you are doing this on paper, a shoebox with three or four dividers is enough machinery. If you want the scheduling handled for you, that is the main thing a spaced repetition app buys you, and turning notes into an Anki deck is worth the setup cost only if you will still be using the deck in a month.

Where flashcards are the wrong tool

Flashcards test recall of discrete items. They are poor at everything else. They will not teach you to structure an essay argument, work a multi step derivation, interpret an unfamiliar graph, or decide which formula a word problem calls for. A student with a perfect physics vocabulary deck can still fail a physics exam, because the exam asks for problem solving and the deck only rehearsed labels.

They are also expensive to make. If your exam is in two days and you have thirty pages of notes, building a deck is probably a worse use of the time than working past papers and writing summaries from memory. Flashcards pay off over weeks, not overnight.

And a deck you never revisit is worse than no deck, because making it felt like studying. Decide the review schedule before you write card one.

Common questions

How many flashcards should I make from one page of notes?

Usually 8 to 15. If you are producing 40 cards per page, you are carding sentences rather than testable facts, and the deck will be too large to finish. If you are producing two, you may be skipping detail the exam will actually ask for.

Is it faster to make flashcards by hand or with an app?

Typing is faster; writing by hand is slower and forces you to compress, which is part of the work. A reasonable split is handwriting for subjects where the wording matters and typing for large volumes of vocabulary. Can I turn photos of handwritten notes into flashcards?

Yes, though results depend on your handwriting. Several tools read a photo of a page and generate questions from it. Do flashcards work for essay subjects?

Partly. They are good for the raw material of an essay: dates, names, quotations, the four criticisms of a theory. They do not practice the skill the essay is graded on, which is building an argument. Use cards for the facts and timed outlines for the argument.
